Dave Allen was an Irish comedian who lived from 1936-2005. Allen delighted television audiences in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada with his controversial humor, poking fun at religious and political institutions. One of his most notable lines that stirred up religious ire was the short phrase, “I’m an atheist, thank God.”
Part of Dave Allen’s stage appeal was his relaxed manner in front of an audience. He would often perch on a bar stool, smoking and drinking, chatting with the audience as though talking to a group of close friends. His easy going manner created an intimacy with the audience, allowing audience members to feel like they were listening to the funny guy in the pub spinning a yarn. Ironically, Allen didn’t drink alchohol on stage. While he allowed his audience to believe he was drinking whiskey and water, he was in fact drinking ginger ale with ice.
