Park Jae-sang (1977 – ) is a singer, songwriter and record producer from South Korea. He is best known by his stage name, Psy, and has thrilled audiences from around the world with his colorful and humorous music videos. “Gangnam Style” is Psy’s latest hit song, with over 300,000,000 views on Youtube alone. The video went viral shortly after it was posted to Youtube on July 15 2012 and has spawned hundreds of fan and parody videos.
The “Gangnam Style” video introduced the world to a silly and fun dance routine, made even more humorous by the cast of characters who perform the dance. The video is a circus of sexy, crazy and downright silly characters performing the Gangnam Style dance routine. Heading up this cast is Psy himself, who poses as an eccentric and lewd 30-something who lusts after younger woman, galloping across the screen with his signature Gangnam Style dance move.
The song is not just entertaining, it has personal links to Psy’s life. Gangnam is an area of Seoul in South Korea where Psy was born, making the title and chorus of the song a tribute to his home town. “Oppa” is a slang word that is used by young girls when addressing an older man; the South Korean equivalent of “uncle”. On September 20, 2012, “Gangnam Style” was recognized by Guinness World Records as the most “liked” video in YouTube history”. Psy has single-handedly taken his home town and South Korean pop culture out of Asia and presented it to the world. You can buy Psy’s CDs online from YG Entertainment.
