Jake Clark calls himself “Pipe Guy”, and is becoming known in his hometown of Adelaide, Australia, for entertaining people with his live street performances. His passion for music led him to create his own instrument out of PVC pipes which he drums on with a pair of flip flops (known in Australia as “thongs”.) As far as this author knows, he’s the only drummer in the world who has decided to change out his drumsticks for footwear. His instrument is unique. It uses pipes to create sound in much the same way as a pipe organ or pan pipes, yet instead of blowing air through the pipes in the way that pipe organs do, or across the pipe ends as with pan pipes; Clark drums on the openings of the pipes to create different tones. In a way, it’s a form of percussive woodwind\u00a0music. Pipe Guy uses his home made musical instrument to create house and trance beats; a musical genre that is generally computer generated. Jake Clark has taken technology out of techno music and found a way to offer the same genre of music through a live, mechanical medium.
