Japanese artist Yosuke Ueno’s painting are an interesting blend of fantasy, surrealistic styling and cartoon elements. Although his characters are all his own original designs, their cartoon styling has been around for nearly a century. His pop surrealism paintings have an innocent appeal about them, even when darker symbolism appears in the art work in the form of skulls, sharp scissors and brooding clouds. The majority of Ueno’s characters are child-like, with large, beautiful eyes and rainbow colored hair. Yosuke Ueno has created an alternate universe with his cute cartoon characters and their surrealist environments, inviting the viewer to visit the artist’s imagination by stepping through the doorway of his art.

Yosuke Ueno’s statement about his art is; “I always start new work without any detailed designs. My hope is for a piece to complete itself beyond my imagination. I sometimes say that artists are parallel to scientists. Scientists have no way of knowing the result of an experiment beforehand. The same can be said about creating art.” – Yosuke Ueno
