Ultimate frisbee is a sport that is similar to both rugby and American football, in that players must pass an object across the field and carry it into the end zone. In rugby and American football, an ovoid ball is used, but in ultimate frisbee, a disc is used. The sport is fast paced and requires the players to be extremely fit. Ultimate frisbee is not as violent as rugby and American football, involving more jumping, running and diving than tackling or scrumming.
\nThe game is often referred to simply as Ultimate, because the name “frisbee” is trademarked by the Wham-O Toy Company. Ultimate frisbee started in the late 1970s as an alternative to organized sport. It could be played anywhere, on a beach or field, requiring only a frisbee and a handful of keen players. There are now over 5 million Ultimate players in the US alone.<\/p>\n

Although Ultimate frisbee is similar to sports like rugby and American football, the disc that is used in the game has changed the tactics of the sport. Many of the game plays are referred to as “stacks” – the order in which the players are arranged on the playing field. An example of a stack tactic is the Vertical Stack. The player line up one in front of the other. The players then make cuts (sudden sprints out of the stack) in an attempt to open themselves up for receiving the disc from the handler (the player with the frisbee).<\/p>\n

Ultimate frisbee is an excellent sport for people who want to get fit and have fun at the same time. Although Ultimate has its own set of rules, there are many simpler variations that allow the players to get creative and change the game to suit their players and environment.
