Sacha Goldberger’s grandmother is a vivacious lady with a lot of character, but she hasn’t always been as happy as she is now. A few years ago Goldberger discovered that his granny was lonely and depressed. Employing his talent and skill as a photographer, Goldberger set out to cheer up his grandmother, suggesting that they create a series of funny photographs. The photographs show pensioner Frederika in a superhero costume in a variety of heroic poses that reveal that she is, after all, one tough old lady. Goldberger’s granny was a bit dubious at first, but after the first few pictures, she couldn’t stop smiling. The hobby has brought both Sacha Goldberger and his grandmother a lot of joy and the project is celebrated by thousands of people from around the world.

The pictures have become so popular that they have been featured on websites like My Modern Met, The Artistery and The Huffington Post. Goldberger has compiled the hilarious and gorgeous photographs of his gran into a book which he has called “Mamika, My Mighty Little Grandmother”. The book has inspired other pensioners not to give up on life too soon, proving that with a little guts and determination life can be filled with fun and laughter no matter how old you are. The book is peppered with humorous anecdotes from the Hungarian grandmother and is a beautiful portrayal of love that crosses generations. Not all of the pictures have Frederika in her superhero costume – in many pictures she is caught in a moment of posed senility; shaving a cactus or feeding a tin of sardines fish food. These photos are a way of looking humorously at the downfalls of age such as memory loss and senility. The photographs are a reminder that everybody ages and how much you enjoy your old age depends on whether you embrace your own peculiarities or try to resist them.
