Katerina Bodrunova was born in 1985 and currently lives in Moscow, Russia. This young photographer creates artistic photographs with a surrealist element. The word “surrealism” means “above reality” and is used to describe art works that mimic the world in a realistic way, but contains subject matter that is fantastic and unrealistic. Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory (1931) is one of the world’s most famous and iconic surrealist paintings, depicting metling clocks in a desert landscape. Bodrunova’s photography is similar in nature to Dali’s paintings, except that each art work is created using a camera instead of paint brushes.

Bodrunova plans each surrealist photograph carefully, posing her models just so to get the effect that she wishes to create. Lighting has always been a very important part of photography, allowing the photographer to capture an emotional essence within a photograph. Each of Bodrunova’s photography sets is carefully lit not only to illuminate the models and objects in the picture, but to create a mood within the finished photograph. After taking several photographs, Bodrunova mixes and matches the elements to create a surrealist collage of photographs.

One of Katerina Bodrunova’s most popular series of photographs is her collection of pictures of underwater dancers. The images of a couple dancing the tango underwater are becoming quite famous, popularly shared on social networks as a symbol of love that feels otherworldly or surreal. The vision of a couple dancing passionately underwater elicits a thrill from the viewer. Is the couple dancing to their death beneath the waves? Do they dance passionately with their last breath?

Katerina Bodrunova is definitely an artistic photographer to keep an eye on. Her ideas and photographs are stunning and thought provoking. Visit Katerina Bodrunova’s website for more surrealist eye candy photography.
