Monsters and Mistresses: The Art of Solongo Monkhooroi

Solongo Monkhooroi is a female artist who grew up between beautiful Mongolian mountains, wide steppes and the Gobi desert. The landscapes that she encountered as a child have influenced her art techniques as an adult; many of her paintings have tall mountain peaks and rushing rivers. Stylizing her paintings to reflect the artistic style of Mongolia, Solongo combines modern ideas and imagery, such as scantily clad models, with ancient and legendary beasts and monsters. Sexy girls ride giant turtles or sit astride behemoth crocodiles in scenes that describe myths, legends and fantasy stories. The contrast between the soft flesh of the women and the tough monster hides adds a sensual essence to Solongo’s paintings; in comparison to the beasts, the women seem incredibly feminine and fragile.

Solongo works in acrylic paint on canvas. This quick-drying paint allows artists to produce a painting in a much shorter time than oil paints and is a cleaner paint to work with as it can be dissolved with water, unlike oil paints which require that brushes be cleaned with solvents. Solongo’s paintings are created in a traditional Mongolian color palette and each painting is rendered in a way that makes the painting seem aged. Solongo’s art works wouldn’t be out of place in a grimoire of magical and mythical beasts.

Fantasy, surrealism and pop art all have a place in Solongo Monkhooroi’s stylized illustrations. This artist enjoys creating art works for both adults and children and has illustrated several children’s books. You can buy original paintings and prints of Solongo Monkhooroi’s art through her online shop.
