Modernize your Body with Yann Black’s Abstract Tattoos

Yann Black is a tattoo artist who works in an avant-garde style. Avant-garde directly translates from French as “advanced guard”, though there is some dispute about whether this is the true meaning given to the name of this abstract art movement. The term is also used to promote extreme social reforms, an aspect of avant-garde art.

Avant-garde artists aim to depict a distorted version of reality, and like Yann Black, will often use lines, shapes and ares of solid color to do so. Sharp angles, circles and other geometric shapes are often found in avant-garde art as a representation of a much more intricate object. Even a simple object such as a table can be rendered down to being represented simply by a rectangle. Of course, the rectangle would likely be skewed, becoming a geometric shapes known as a trapezium.

Yann Black chooses to work mostly in black and red tattoo inks, and prefers to use solid lines and opaque areas of color. Texture is sometimes created in the tattoo by inking “scribbles” into the area. This adds to the artistic nature of the tattoo, making the body art appear to be the result of an artist doodling on the skin with a marker rather than creating a permanent art work. Yann Black works out of Montreal, Canada, and doesn’t travel to tattoo fairs or to clients. He’s a busy guy – you may have to wait a year or two from this Avant Garde tattoo artist. Although Black is happy to work with a client to create a design it appears his best work occurs when he is left to his own devices.
