Kalem Berntsen takes us through his entire process of planting seed potatoes and tomatoes before combining the two separate plants into one plant with a gardening technique known as grafting, after which he harvests both the tomatoes and potatoes and cooks them up to make home-grown, home-cooked chips ‘n sauce; the New Zealanders’ name for ketchup and fries.
Many people believe that they can’t grow their own food, but Kalem shows us that it’s not so hard; he managed to get an entire meal, with extra sauce, from two planting containers. Such a project could be successful even on a small balcony, provided that the plants get plenty of sun and are protected from strong winds. It’s the kind of project that allows city folk to enjoy some home-grown food, and the kind of project that children would learn a great deal from while enjoying the literal fruits of their own labour.
Berntsen’s Youtube channel is a treasure trove of easy-watching videos centered around plants and gardening. The style of his videos is very relaxed and his mannerisms are calm and cheerful. Even if you aren’t into gardening; you’re sure to find some videos to chill out and enjoy; maybe even with a plate of chips ‘n fries.
