Five Inspiring Painters who became Tattoo Artists

Many painters from around the world have at some point explored the idea of becoming a tattoo artist. The appeal of working on a living canvas and knowing that their art work will be moving about through the world has led many fine art masters to become tattoo artists.

Jesse Smith

Jesse Smith is an American graffiti artist who traded in his spray cans for a tattoo machine. His history in graffiti shows through in his new school designs that boast cartoon caricatures and warped perspectives. Take a look at Jesse Smith’s paintings in Awesome Tattoo Paintings by New School Artist Jesse Smith or check out his awesome new school tattoo art in Jesse Smith Creates Cartoon Graffiti Tattoos.

Shawn Barber

Painter Shawn Barber’s initial introduction to the world of tattoos was through fine art. Over many years, Barber created paintings of tattooed people in a beautiful, unusual style. His paintings were so celebrated and his art style so appreciated that Sean Barber ultimately decided to take on a new art form – indelibly inking his artwork onto living flesh. Jukan

Jukan is a tattoo artist working in Berlin, Germany, who employs watercolor techniques in his abstract tattoos. Splashes of watery paint, along with splatters and sketchy lines add to the fine art nature of Jukan’s exquisite tattoo designs. Amanda Wachob

Amanda Wachob studied fine arts in New York before moving on to tattooing. Her background in fine art has had a vivid effect on her tattoo designs, which are abstract in form and resemble watercolor paintings. Somehow, Wachob has managed to translate the effect of brushstrokes onto skin, a feat worth noting.

Sven Groenewald

Sven Groenewald works at the Scratchers Paradise tattoo studio in Berlin, Germany. The name of the store aptly describes Groenewald’s style, which resembles the scratchy nature of pencil sketches. Artistic additions of watercolor paint transform Groenewald’s tattoo designs into living paintings.
