20 Hours of Illustration in 11 Minutes – Sebastian Koever’s “Endlessness”

In this time lapse video, Sebastian Koever illustrates a busy fantasy world in black ink on card. The scene is so complex that anyone who starts looking at it can’t help but stare at it for a while, allowing themselves to be drawn into the world along wooden pathways and around relics from the past. There is only one human character in the scene, who appears at the end of the video, yet the scene is filled with the evidence of human activity and creativity; a book is left lying open as though its reader plans to return to it and swings and even a couch on a pulley system look as though they are well-used. Other than the single human character, the only other living elements within the scene are inanimate plants. Despite the lack of characters to interact with the scene, the illustration is filled with the signs of living and its this evidence of human time and effort that makes the scene so appealing.

Koever has put plenty of his own time and effort into this art work. In total, the drawing took him 20 hours to create. While he probably could have created the scene in less time, Koever instead chose to not hold himself back and packed the scene with tiny details and interesting textures. Great art takes time and Sebastian Koever certainly has the necessary patience…

Koever was born in Germany but now lives in Toronto, Canada, where he continues to explore his relationship with art through the mediums of illustration, photography and film. You can see more art videos by Sebastian Koever on his Youtube channel or contact the artist through his website.
